About Kyaikkhami

The name Kyaikkhami is derived from the Mon language, where Kyaik refers to pagoda and Khami is also believed to mean wait for in local culture. According to legend, this pagoda was built at a sacred site waiting for the relics of the Buddha to be brought by sea. The name reflects this religious story of a place waiting patiently for the Buddhablessing and hence a sacred place for the Mon.

The reason why Kyaikkhami was decided to construct besides the beach is filled with history. Many Thousand years ago, it is believed that Buddha visited the surroundings and sat on the rock, where he gave 11 of his hairs upon 20 sons of the king to serve as relics. Ten of the sons quickly constructed a pagoda to protect these relics.

Another history is caused when a king chose to send four Buddha statues containing relics across the ocean from the Buddhist nation of SiriLaka. He thought they would head to places where other artifacts were already arrived and as intented, one arrived Kyaikkhami. Currently, it is believed that the status resides in a shrine chamber neneath the pagoda.
